On 1870, with the discovery of coal reserves in the south of Santa Catarina State,
in the region of Tubarão, studies done appointed Imbituba as the place to build a port for the shipment of this mineral.
With this finality was started a railway construction, linking the Port - not build yet - to the coal mines, nowadays named
"Ferrovia Dona Tereza Cristina".
At 1919, when Mr. Lauro Muller (born at Santa Catarina) was the Ministry of Transports, the permission to build the port was obtained.
Immediately the job was started with the berth (nowadays berth #1), breakwater, offices and warehouses construction.
On 03.11.1922 was created the CDI - companhia Docas de Imbituba and on January 1923 started the operations as a small port,
receiving coastal passengers and cargo vessels from the Companhia Nacional de Navegação Costeira.
